Syncope/POTS

Syncope is by definition a loss of consciousness possibly caused by many different mechanisms. 

It can be:

  • Cardiac causes       
  • Dehydration
  • Endocrine related
  • Vasovagal: vagus nerve stimulation drops heart rates and subsequently blood pressure leading to a loss of consciousness
  • Neurologic: many causes including seizures, stroke or transient ischemic attack
  • Orthostatic intolerance: drop in blood pressure from positional changes
  • Medication induced
  • Unknown
